Thankful for the Armor of God

(Ephesians 6:10–20; Psalm 28:7)

The leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and kitchens are filled with the aromas of Thanksgiving. Families gather to share food, laughter, and memories. Yet as my faith has deepened, I've realized how easy it is to thank God for the meal before us without acknowledging the Giver of all things. Before I became Lutheran, my focus was mainly on food and fellowship—not on God's presence among us. But as we grow closer to Him, our gratitude deepens. We see not only His daily bread but also His daily protection—the Armor of God that clothes us in truth, faith, and salvation.

“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer.” — Psalm 18:2

"Be strong in the Lord… Put on the whole armor of God." — Ephesians 6:10–11

This Thanksgiving, we thank God not only for food that sustains our bodies but for the armor that sustains our faith—His gifts that protect and strengthen us each day.

  • The Belt of Truth – Thank You, Lord, for Your Word that never changes.
  • The Breastplate of Righteousness – Thank You for covering me in Christ's righteousness.
  • The Shoes of Peace – Thank You for guiding my steps to share Your love.
  • The Shield of Faith – Thank You for guarding my heart from fear and doubt.
  • The Helmet of Salvation – Thank You for the hope of eternal life.
  • The Sword of the Spirit – Thank You for the power of Your Word against temptation.

None of this is my doing—they are God's gracious gifts through the Word, Baptism, and the Lord's Supper. Each piece of the armor comes from Christ Himself. He is the one who clothes us, protects us, and fights for us. On the cross, Jesus faced the enemy without earthly armor and won the battle we never could. Because of His victory, we stand firm not in fear but in faith.

"In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." — Romans 8:37

“The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped.” — Psalm 28:7

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts… and be thankful." — Colossians 3:15

So as we gather this Thanksgiving, let’s remember our most incredible feast is the one Christ prepares—where He feeds us with His Word and strengthens us in His grace.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for feeding us with Your Word and clothing us in Your armor. Keep us strong in faith, thankful in all things, and steadfast in Your peace. Let our gratitude rest not on earthly gifts but on Your eternal victory. Amen.

This is a devotion I wrote for my church in November 2025.
